Hertha BSC need to beat Holstein Kiel at home to maintain their slight hopes of promotion to Bundesliga. The capital city club lost their momentum after a home defeat to Kaiserslautern followed by an uninspiring draw against Eintracht Braunschweig.
It’s now mainly down to whether the teams above them drop points in the final four rounds of the league, as there is a seven-point gap with third-placed Elversberg and Stefan Leitl’s side. Hertha are in search of a first home win since a 2-1 victory against Nürnberg on the first day of March.
In contrast, Kiel are in excellent form of late as Tim Walter’s men picked up 10 points from the last four rounds. The experienced coach needed some time to settle at last season’s Bundesliga club, but they’re now on the perfect road to safety.
However, wins for Eintracht Braunschweig and Fortuna Düsseldorf on Friday mean Kiel are now only a point ahead of two teams that started the matchday in the relegation zone. Dawid Kownacki scored the only goal of the reverse fixture as Hertha picked up a late win.
