Did Avinash Tiwary Throw Shade At Salman Khan, Shah Rukh? His ‘60-Year-Olds With Abs’ Remark Sparks Buzz

Ginny Wedss Sunny 2 has finally hit theatres on April 24, bringing back a familiar mix of romance, family drama, and light comedy. Directed by Prasshant Jha, rom-com movie starts on a fun and easy note by showing an arranged marriage setup where both character true to hide parts of their past to seem perfect. Avinash Tiwary’s movie feels light and entertaining in the beginning which includes some good humour and relatable moments. Interestingly, the first Ginny Weds Sunny (2020) didn’t release in theatres and came directly on OTT which stars Yami Gautam Dhar and Vikrant Massey.

Actor Avinash Tiwary has spoken out against Bollywood’s growing fixation on box office numbers and physical appearances, especially the pressure on actors to maintain six-pack abs. He highlighted what he sees as a disconnect between genuine talent and the kind of support it receives from audiences. According to him, performers like Manoj Bajpayee, Vikrant Massey, and Pratik Gandhi are often praised as “underrated,” but that appreciation rarely translates into people actually turning up to watch their films in theatres. He also drew comparisons with South cinema and Hollywood, where he believes craft and talent are valued more consistently.

‘Why Is It Only in Bollywood?’: Avinash Questions Industry Standards

During a conversation with Siddharth Kanan, Avinash elaborated on this disparity. He pointed out that while actors such as Manoj Bajpayee, Vikrant Massey, and Pratik Gandhi are widely respected, audiences don’t always back them at the box office. He questioned why Bollywood seems uniquely focused on image and physique, unlike other industries.
“Aapko kahin pe bhi, kisi industry mein… I know I might get flak for this, par kahin pe bhi 60 saal ke log 6-pack, 8-pack bana ke ghoom rahe hain? (Anywhere, in any industry… I know I might get flak for this, but where else do you see 60-year-olds walking around with six-pack or eight-pack abs?) Even in Hollywood, Arnold Schwarzenegger is not doing that, Sylvester Stallone… there is no need to. There is no vanity or desirability that needs to be sold off. Not even in the South, why is it only in the Hindi film industry? That is a question we all need to answer,” Avinash said.

‘We Are Selling Obsession’: Actor Highlights Lack of Value for Craft

He went on to stress that the industry often overlooks acting skill and craft in favour of superficial markers of success.
“There’s no value for the skill, craft. Audience baithke box office numbers dekh rahi hai. Kahan hota hai yeh sab? Main 20 saal se acting kar raha hoon (Audience is looking at box office numbers. Where else does this happen? I have been acting for 20 years), and there are various projects that I have done, and we can always debate what is good and bad. I’m talking about others who are universally accepted. If we are not putting value here, then what are we putting value on? Someone just takes their shirt off, one photo is clicked, and there is so much buzz. If it’s only about looks, films should just have models. We are selling obsession.”

Internet Reacts, Fans Defend Superstars

Although Avinash did not mention any names directly, his remarks sparked reactions online. Fans of major stars like Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan, and Akshay Kumar interpreted his comments as a dig at their favourite actors. Salman and Akshay have long been associated with their fitness-driven screen personas, while Shah Rukh recently embraced high-octane action roles in films like Pathaan and Jawan at the age of 58. After a clip of the interview surfaced on Reddit, several users criticised Avinash, calling his remarks unnecessary.

Recent Release and What’s Next

On the work front, Avinash was recently seen in the romantic comedy Ginny Wedss Sunny 2, which released in theatres on April 24. Directed by Prasshant Jha, the film also stars Medha Shankr, along with Lilette Dubey, Sudhir Pandey, Govind Namdev, Gopi Bhalla, and Rohit Chaudhary in key roles. A follow-up to Ginny Wedss Sunny, the film had a disappointing opening, earning just ₹30 lakh on its first day at the box office.
He is set to appear next in Imtiaz Ali’s upcoming Netflix series O Saathi Re. Directed by Arif Ali and created by Imtiaz Ali, the series also features Aditi Rao Hydari and Arjun Rampal. The release date for the show is yet to be announced.
