West Bengal Election 2026: Big challenge for BJP to win Mamata Banerjee’s ‘fort’ in Bengal; What is political equations?

  • Although there is anti-incumbency sentiment in the state, it is not uniform across Bengal
  • Mamata Banerjee’s party seems to be benefiting from her lucrative schemes
  • BJP does not have a local face to challenge Mamata Banerjee for the post of Chief Minister

West Bengal Assembly Election 2026: The Trinamool Congress has been in power in West Bengal for the past 15 years under the leadership of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. There is talk of an anti-incumbency atmosphere as the polling for the 2026 assembly elections is underway. However, converting this discontent into votes and gaining power is turning out to be the biggest challenge facing the Bharatiya Janata Party.

Scattered discontent, not a unified wave

According to experts, though there is anti-incumbency sentiment in the state, it is not uniform across Bengal. While there is unemployment, economic hardship, allegations of corruption and discontent with law and order, this discontent varies across districts and across social groups. So BJP is finding it difficult to unite this scattered displeasure.

Where is TMC benefiting?

Mamata Banerjee’s party seems to be benefiting from her lucrative schemes. These schemes have created a ‘beneficiary electorate’ especially among women and rural voters. As this section is likely to remain largely loyal to the TMC, the impact of the anti-incumbency wave remains limited.

Strengths and limitations of BJP

BJP has put a lot of strength in this election. From Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s meetings, he has been campaigning aggressively on the issues of infiltration, governance and corruption. The party has also planned a strategy at the booth level.

Still, there are some clear hurdles facing the BJP. The party is still portrayed as an ‘outside party’ in the state. Also, BJP does not have a local face to challenge Mamata Banerjee for the post of Chief Minister. Although Union Home Minister Amit Shah has raised the issue of Bengali face, BJP is still lagging behind TMC at the organizational level.

Impact of Voter List Controversy

The issue of exclusion and re-inclusion of names in the electoral roll has heated up the political atmosphere. The TMC hopes that the disgruntled section will vote against the BJP. However, it is not yet clear who exactly will benefit from this dispute.

Major Factors Determining Outcome

There seems to be no clear wave in this election. Voters are calm and the final outcome will depend on a few key factors:

How BJP unites the scattered anti-incumbency sentiment

How long will the impact of TMC’s welfare schemes last?

The equation of identity and local politics

Strength and organization of local candidates

Overall, despite the anti-incumbency wave, it will not be enough. To win against a strong leadership like Mamata Banerjee, BJP will have to turn various factors in its favour. The result on May 4 will seal all these equations.
