Kurmasana provides relief from stress, constipation and back pain.
In today’s busy life, people’s daily routine has become so busy that problems like stress, anxiety, back pain, constipation and fatigue are increasing rapidly. Working long hours, wrong eating habits and lack of physical activity directly affect the body and mental health.
In such a situation, yoga has become an important way to keep the body fit and have mental peace. There are many yoga asanas which help in strengthening the body from within. One of these is Kurmasana, which is called Tortoise Pose in English.
Kurmasana is made up of two Sanskrit words. In this, ‘Kurma’ means tortoise and ‘Aasan’ means posture. In this asana, the posture of the body looks somewhat like that of a tortoise. This asana helps in relieving the person from stress and connecting him to inner peace.
To practice Kurmasana, first of all spread both the legs towards the front. Then keep the feet a little apart and bend the knees slightly. While exhaling slowly, bend the body forward and take both hands out from below the knees. After this, try to bend the body further and bring the chest and chin closer to the ground. Keep breathing normal during this time. After remaining in this position for some time, slowly come back to normal position.
Kurmasana benefits the body in many ways. This asana creates stretch in the back and spine, which increases the flexibility of the body. This asana is considered very beneficial for people who work while sitting for a long time, because it helps in reducing the stiffness of the back and waist. With its regular practice, blood circulation in the spinal cord improves and energy remains in the body.
Kurmasana is also considered very beneficial for the digestive system. It creates pressure on the stomach muscles, which improves digestion. This asana also helps in providing relief from problems like gas, constipation and indigestion. This asana helps in activating the pancreas, which can improve the balance of insulin in the body. It is also considered beneficial for people suffering from diabetes.
Kurmasana is also considered a very effective yoga for mental health. It helps in calming the mind and reducing stress. This asana can prove to be a relief for people who feel constant anxiety and mental pressure. Practicing this increases concentration and keeps the mind calm.
It is important to be careful while doing Kurmasana. People who have problems with knees, waist, shoulders or spine pain should not do this asana without expert advice. Pregnant women and people suffering from severe arthritis or sciatica are also advised to avoid it.
