Mediator or advocate? Iran raised big questions on Pakistan’s role

Amidst efforts to reduce tension between America and Iran and reach a possible agreement, serious questions are now being raised on Pakistan’s role. Recently, a senior Iranian MP has openly expressed his displeasure over Islamabad’s mediation ability and termed it biased, which has sparked a new debate in regional diplomacy.

What did Ibrahim Razai say?

Ebrahim Razai, spokesperson of the National Security and Foreign Policy Commission attached to the Parliament of Iran, while giving his reaction on the social media platform X, said that it is very important for any mediator to be impartial, but Pakistan does not meet this criterion. He alleged that Pakistan often gives priority to the interests of Donald Trump and avoids openly expressing his views against America.

Ibrahim Razai also said that even though Pakistan is Iran’s neighbor and friendly country, it cannot be completely trusted for talks. According to him, initially America had accepted the proposal given through Pakistan, but later it went back on its promise. He also claimed that Pakistan did not share information about this entire incident publicly.

What did the Iranian MP say?

The Iranian MP further said that America had also given many assurances on issues related to Lebanon and seized properties, but they were not fulfilled. In such a situation, Pakistan’s role seems to be biased instead of being an impartial mediator, which seems to be serving the interests of one party.

Meanwhile, efforts are on to take the talks forward. Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has been very active in diplomatic activities in recent times. He visited Pakistan and met many top leaders including Army Chief Asim Munir and Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif.

Why did Araghchi reach Oman?

Earlier, Araghchi had also reached Oman, where he discussed the security of the Strait of Hormuz and other important diplomatic issues with Sultan Haitham bin Tariq Al-Said. According to reports, apart from the nuclear program, these talks also include important topics like security of sea lanes, new legal framework, compensation and removal of maritime sanctions imposed by America.

However, there seems to be slowness in the negotiation process. Meanwhile, Donald Trump has said that if Iran wants to take the talks forward, it will have to take the initiative itself. This comment has come at a time when America has canceled the proposed talks in Pakistan, which has further increased the complexity of the entire matter.
