Assembly elections: Election Commission strict before the second phase in West Bengal
Bureau Prayagraj. The Election Commission of India has taken a tough stance on law and order in view of the upcoming elections and has issued strict instructions to the police administration. According to sources, the Commission has given a clear message to the Kolkata Police Commissioner (CP), all Deputy Commissioners (DCP), Superintendents of Police (SP) of the districts including police station level officers that any kind of negligence will not be tolerated.
The Commission has directed that if any person in the jurisdiction of any officer is found with explosive material or any intimidation tactics are adopted, the concerned police station in-charge will be held directly responsible for it. The Commission has warned that in such a situation the officer concerned may have to face unprecedented consequences and strict action will be taken against him.
According to sources, the Commission has directed all police officers to conduct extensive search operations in their respective areas within the next 24 hours. During this period, any kind of illegal or suspicious material, especially explosive materials, has been asked to be confiscated immediately. Besides, instructions have also been given to increase surveillance in sensitive areas and keep a close watch on anti-social elements.
This step of the Election Commission has been taken with the aim of conducting the election process in a fair, peaceful and fear-free environment. The Commission believes that any kind of violence or threat can affect the democratic process, hence it is necessary to stop it at all costs.
The police administration has also been asked to keep the local intelligence system active and immediately report any suspicious activity to higher authorities. Apart from this, the general public has also been appealed to immediately report any suspicious object or activity to the police.
It is clear from this strict stance of the Election Commission that it does not want to take any risk regarding any kind of disturbance or violence during the elections and for this, full vigilance is being taken at the administrative level. Voting for the second phase will take place on April 29.
