Those who vote fake will be sent to jail, warns Election Commission!

Ahead of the second and final phase of West Bengal Assembly elections, the Election Commission of India (ECI) on Monday warned that any attempt at fraudulent voting will face strict legal action. People making such attempts may also be jailed.

The office of the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of the state said that CCTV cameras equipped with Artificial Intelligence (AI) will be installed at all the polling booths, which will enable the web-casting work to be done in a better way.

These cameras will have direct connection with the central control room of the CEO office in Kolkata. Besides, they will also have direct connection with the District Control Room set up in the offices of the District Magistrate-cum-District Election Officers.

An official of the CEO office said, “The activities happening inside the polling booth will be continuously monitored from the control room. In such a situation, if any person tries to cast fake vote, he can be easily identified, monitored and can also be arrested.”

The Election Commission has made it clear that attempts to cast false votes are punishable under Section 172 of the Indian Judicial Code (BNS), 2023, in which the culprit can be punished with rigorous imprisonment for up to one year.

“Even if such attempts are made by mistake or carelessness, legal difficulties cannot be avoided. This is necessary to maintain the principle of ‘one person, one vote’. If there is any election-related complaint or suggestion, the common man can directly contact the Commission, either by calling the toll-free number or by sending an email,” said an official from the CEO office.

The second phase of elections for 142 assembly seats will be held amid tight security of 2,407 companies of central forces, besides personnel of West Bengal Police and Kolkata Police.

There will be a total of 142 general observers and 95 police observers. This number is more than the 84 observers deployed during the first phase of voting for 152 assembly seats on April 23. The election results will be declared on May 4.
