Gujarat Local Body Elections 2026 Bjp Takes A Commanding Lead Winning 573 Seats Congress Limited To 95

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has taken a clear lead in the initial trends of vote counting for the local body elections 2026 in Gujarat. According to official data available till 11 am on Tuesday, the party has led or won a total of 573 seats in municipal corporations, municipalities and panchayats. Whereas Congress has been declared ahead or victorious on 95 seats and other parties and independent candidates on 40 seats.

BJP has so far won 51 seats in Municipal Corporations, out of which candidates were elected unopposed on 41 seats. The party also continues to dominate the municipalities (Nagarpalikas), where it is leading on 428 seats, while the Congress is on 25 and others on seven seats.

In district panchayats, BJP has won 64 seats, while Congress has won only one seat. In Taluka Panchayats, BJP is leading on 357 seats, while Congress is leading on 24 and others on 14 seats.

The BJP has also performed strongly in some major municipalities. In Patdi municipality, the party won all 24 seats, of which 16 remained unopposed. The BJP has crossed the majority mark in the 36-member body in Viramgam municipality, where 13 candidates were already elected unopposed and winning six seats.

BJP has also taken lead in Dholka Municipality, where results of 21 out of 36 seats have been declared. Of these, 11 seats were won unopposed and 10 seats were won through voting.

Under these elections, voting was held in 15 municipal corporations, 84 municipalities, 34 district panchayats and 260 taluka panchayats in the state. After the voting held on April 26, counting of votes started at various centers across the state on Tuesday (April 28).

Voting percentage varies at different levels. Voting was recorded at 49.02 percent in municipal corporations, 59.50 percent in municipalities, 61.69 percent in district panchayats and 62.38 percent in taluka panchayats. There was 55.38 percent voting in the by-elections.

These elections are being considered an important indicator of political strength at the grassroots level in the state. Apart from BJP and Congress, Aam Aadmi Party and independent candidates are also in the fray in the elections.

According to officials, counting of votes is still going on and more results are expected throughout the day. While initial trends have shown the strong position of BJP, these results are being considered a challenging sign for Congress and other parties.
