“You should have been speaking French!” King Charles chides Trump; US President laughs sheepishly
Washington: During a state dinner held at the White House, the atmosphere became extremely interesting when King Charles III silenced US President Donald Trump. Trump often taunts European countries, saying that if America hadn’t helped in World War II, Europeans would be speaking German today. In a sharp and humorous response, King Charles said, “If it weren’t for us, the British, you’d be speaking French.” Trump simply laughed sheepishly at this “roast” from the King.
King Charles’s comment wasn’t a simple joke, but a profound sarcasm ripped from the pages of history. He was referring to a time when, nearly 250 years before American independence, the British and French armies were engaged in a fierce battle for control of North America. The King implied that if the British hadn’t defeated France at that time, America would be a French-speaking nation today, rather than an English-speaking nation.
Trump had said at the Davos summit in January that without American aid, the world would be speaking “German and a little Japanese.” In other words, they would be ruled by Germans and Japanese. Charles, in a similar vein, reminded Trump that America’s existence is also linked to British history.
King Charles didn’t stop there; he also poked fun at Trump’s former real estate background. He poked fun at the demolition Trump carried out to build a $400 million lavish ballroom in the White House’s East Wing. He laughed and remarked, “We British also attempted to redevelop the White House in 1814.” In reality, Charles was jokingly recalling the incident when British troops set the White House on fire in 1814.
