PBKS loss a reality check, says coach James Hopes

Mullanpur: Punjab Kings (PBKS) fast-bowling coach James Hopes described his side’s first defeat of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 season as a “reality check”, while expressing confidence that the team has the ability to bounce back strongly in the coming matches.

PBKS suffered a six-wicket loss to Rajasthan Royals (RR) on Tuesday night, bringing an end to their unbeaten run in the tournament. Despite the setback, Hopes maintained that the result could serve as a timely reminder for the team to recalibrate and adapt better to varying match conditions.

‘Flat wicket made it tough for bowlers’

Analysing the match, Hopes pointed out that the batting-friendly nature of the pitch at Mullanpur made it extremely challenging for bowlers, particularly during the powerplay overs.

“The wicket was very good, flat, and the ball was flying around. In the first six overs, it’s hard for the fast bowlers,” Hopes said after the match.

He emphasised that such conditions often tilt the balance heavily in favour of batters, leaving bowlers with minimal margin for error.

Tactical changes and team combinations

Hopes revealed that PBKS made tactical adjustments for the game, including introducing New Zealand pacer Lockie Ferguson into the playing XI and relying more on spin options to counter the conditions.

“We went with a slightly different look tonight. Our two spinners bowled very well, and it was good to get Lockie into the tournament,” he said.

He clarified that Ferguson’s inclusion was part of a pre-planned strategy rather than an experimental move, underlining the team’s intent to test different combinations as the tournament progresses.

Adaptability key to IPL success

The PBKS bowling coach stressed that adaptability would be crucial for teams aiming to succeed in the IPL, where conditions can vary significantly from venue to venue.

“We are not going to complain about the conditions we get. If they are good or bad, we will adjust and get on with it,” Hopes said, while also appreciating the ground staff for preparing quality surfaces.

Drawing comparisons, he highlighted how top teams consistently adjust to different scenarios.

“The team that adapts best over the IPL will usually end up in the finals. We believe we are good at adjusting, just like teams such as Royal Challengers Bengaluru,” he added.

‘Not doom and gloom’

Despite the defeat, Hopes struck an optimistic tone, reminding that PBKS have enjoyed a strong campaign so far.

“It’s game eight, and we have just lost our first match. It’s not doom and gloom; it’s a reality check,” he said.

PBKS continue to lead the points table with 13 points, having registered six wins along with one no result and a single loss.

Praise for young opening pair

Hopes also had words of praise for PBKS’s young opening duo of Priyansh Arya and Prabhsimran Singh, backing them to become a formidable partnership in the long run.

“They don’t realise how good they are yet. They can be a dominant opening pair for years,” he remarked.

The coach’s comments underline the franchise’s focus on building a strong core for sustained success beyond the current season.

Batting positives despite defeat

PBKS posted a commanding total of 222/4 after being put in to bat, with Marcus Stoinis leading the charge with an unbeaten 62 off 22 balls. Prabhsimran Singh also contributed significantly with 59 runs off 44 deliveries.

Hopes highlighted Stoinis’s performance as a major positive, noting that the Australian all-rounder capitalised on the opportunity to spend time at the crease.

“Our top order has been flying, but we have power down the order too. Stoinis got his opportunity and made it count,” he said.

Rajasthan Royals seal impressive chase

In response, RR executed a clinical chase, powered by contributions across their batting line-up. Yashasvi Jaiswal (51 off 27) and Vaibhav Sooryavanshi (43 off 16) provided a strong start with a 51-run opening stand.

The match was eventually sealed by an unbeaten 77-run partnership for the fifth wicket between Donovan Ferreira (52* off 26) and Shubham Dubey (31* off 12), guiding RR to victory with four balls remaining.

The win lifted RR to third place in the standings with 12 points from nine matches.

Conclusion

While PBKS’s unbeaten streak came to an end, James Hopes’s assessment reflects a team grounded in realism and focused on long-term performance. By treating the loss as a learning opportunity rather than a setback, PBKS appear well-positioned to regroup and continue their strong run in IPL 2026. With adaptability emerging as a key theme, the team will aim to fine-tune its strategies and maintain its place at the top of the table.
