In this ordinance related to “Special provision for relieving public officials”, the present government has recommended to the President to simultaneously cancel the political appointments made to government and constitutional posts during the tenure of the previous governments.

The Prime Minister’s Secretariat has said that “This ordinance has been brought with the aim of relieving politically appointed and currently serving officials in public bodies.”

According to the secretariat, the objective of the ordinance is to make appointments in public bodies transparent and competitive, end party political interference, speed up public works, refund money of small savers of cooperative institutions and make services like land, freight and survey effective.

If the President approves this ordinance, then about 2200 government appointments will be canceled in one stroke. This ordinance is part of the governance reform agenda of the Balendra government.

After the formation of the government, ruling party president Ravi Lamichhane had appealed to all those getting political appointments to resign. After this appeal very few people have left their posts.
