Bargi Dam accident: Government orders investigation, ban on cruise operations, compensation of Rs 2 lakh to the families of the deceased
Local residents who saved lives will be honored on Independence Day
Bhopal. The Madhya Pradesh government on Friday ordered an investigation into the cruise accident that took place at Bargi Dam in Jabalpur district and banned the operation of cruise ships in the state. Expressing condolences to the families of the deceased, Chief Minister Mohan Yadav said that the local residents who took risks to save lives during the accident will be honored on Independence Day for their bravery.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also expressed grief over the incident and announced an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh each to the families of the deceased and Rs 50 thousand each to the injured from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund (PMNRF).
Officials said that a cruise ship capsized after being hit by a sudden storm on Thursday evening in the Bargi Dam built on the Narmada River, in which nine people died, while 28 people were saved.
The Chief Minister said that the Tourism Department will investigate this accident so that such incidents can be prevented from recurring in future. He said that the rescue teams displayed courage and saved the lives of many people.
Yadav said that Public Works Minister Rakesh Singh, Tourism Minister Dharmendra Singh Lodhi, Principal Secretary Sanjay Dubey, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and local administration officials were immediately involved in relief and rescue operations.
He said, our relief and rescue team has evacuated about 29 people safely. The rescue operation is ongoing and nine bodies have been recovered so far.
Deputy Chief Minister Jagdish Deora said that the Tourism Minister has issued orders to ban cruise operations in the state and an investigation into the accident has been initiated.
Rs 2 lakh compensation to the deceased
Prime Minister Modi wrote on ‘X’, “The loss of life due to boat capsizing in Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh is extremely sad. Express my condolences to the bereaved families. I wish for the speedy recovery of the injured. The local administration is providing all possible assistance to the affected people. He said that the families of the deceased will be given an assistance of Rs 2 lakh each from PMNRF and the injured will be given Rs 50 thousand each.
