of 2026 Indian Premier League (IPL) The season of two of the biggest stars of Mumbai Indians, Suryakumar Yadav And Jasprit Bumrah has been far from ideal. Known for their match-winning abilities, both the players have struggled a lot this season, which has seen Mumbai Indians stuck at the bottom of the points table.
Poor form of star cricketers is a matter of concern for Mumbai Indians
Suryakumar, often considered the backbone of MI’s batting order, is going through an unusually weak phase. In eight matches so far, he has scored only 162 runs at an average of 20.25. His strike rate of 140.87, which is fine by normal standards, is well below his usual explosive standards, making the decline in his form even more pronounced.
On the bowling front, Bumrah’s statistics raise questions in the cricket world. Considered one of the finest death bowlers in modern cricket, he is facing the toughest IPL season of his career, as per many analysts. The fast bowler remained wicketless in his first five matches before finally breaking the drought against Gujarat Titans. With just two wickets in eight matches and an economy rate of 8.80, Bumrah has struggled to make his usual impact in crucial phases of the innings.
Mahela Jayawardene names two ‘match winners’ of MI
Despite the worrying form of both the players, the head coach of Mumbai Indians Mahela Jayawardene has fully supported the pair ahead of the high-stakes clash against Chennai Super Kings.
Speaking at the pre-match press conference, Jayawardene stressed the importance of supporting experienced players during tough times.
“They are match winners, and they are human beings. They will go through these things, and their character is such that they will come back and fight,” Jayawardene said.
He also highlighted the mental aspect of the game, suggesting that players like Suryakumar and Bumrah often put excessive pressure on themselves to perform in every match.
“The purpose of our conversation is to remind them not to put too much pressure on themselves because they feel like they have to perform on their own. It’s about reminding them that it’s OK—these things happen. Let’s just keep trying,” Jayawardene added
The former Sri Lankan captain’s comments underline MI’s belief in the long-term value of its star players, even if it is a challenging campaign.
Fans hope MI will bounce back against CSK
Mumbai Indians will be keen to change their fortunes when they face Chennai Super Kings at the iconic MA Chidambaram Stadium. The importance of this match increases as MI had faced a humiliating 103-run defeat against CSK on April 23 this season.
That defeat exposed several weaknesses in MI’s setup, including inconsistent batting and ineffective bowling at crucial moments. However, the team management believes there is still time to regroup and find the right combination.
Interestingly, CSK have also shown weaknesses in recent matches, especially in their execution of death overs. This gives MI a potential opportunity to make a comeback.
