In the year 1913, the film ‘Raja Harishchandra’ directed by Dadasaheb Phalke was released. This was India’s first film, which was about 50 minutes long. It was made using four reels, which were approximately 3,700 feet long. 15 thousand rupees were spent in making the first film.

How was this film made?

On 3 May 1913, a historic event took place in Mumbai (then Bombay). India’s first full-length feature film Raja Harishchandra was shown at the Coronation Theater in Girgaon. Cinema was new in many parts of the world at that time, and this film showed a new way of storytelling to Indian audiences. This silent film, about 50 minutes long, was made in four reels. In this, Marathi language intertitles (written dialogues coming in between) were used to explain the story.

Interestingly, the first screening of the film was held for a special audience at the Olympia Theater on Grant Road on 21 April 1913. After this, it was released to the general public in May, which was very much liked by the audience and adopted with enthusiasm.

How much was the film made for?

In the year 1910, Dadasaheb Phalke saw the film “The Life of Christ” in Mumbai. He was impressed by this and wondered whether such an Indian film could be made. After this he decided to make a film. After this he asked for funds from many places to produce. But no one gave the money. Then he mortgaged his insurance and even sold his wife Saraswati Bai’s jewellery. In this film, the producer, director, cameraman, writer, all were Dadasaab Phalke. A budget of only Rs 15 thousand was spent in making the film. After release, the film earned only Rs 3 on the first day.
