There will be a big water crisis in the country; 166 Reservoir Levels Below 40 Percent, ‘These’ States Hardest Hit…
New Delhi : The country is now facing extreme heat. Citizens are suffering a lot due to this heat. Despite this, the situation of water resources in the country is seen to be decreasing day by day. With the onset of summer, the signs of crisis have become more apparent. According to the Central Water Commission, available water in 166 major reservoirs has reduced to less than 40 percent of their total capacity.
A decline in water levels has also been reported in several major river basins in the country, raising concerns about the deterioration of the regional water balance. The total live stock in the country’s 166 reservoirs has come down to 71.082 billion cubic meters (BCM), which is only 38.72 percent of their total capacity of 183.565 BCM. The level was 44.71 percent on April 9, 2026, a significant decline in just three weeks. These 166 reservoirs hold approximately 71.20 percent of the country’s total estimated water storage capacity of 257812 billion cubic meters (BCM). Out of these 20 reservoirs are connected with hydroelectric power plants and have a combined capacity of 35299 BCM.
According to the Central Water Commission, the water level in several major river basins has decreased compared to the beginning of April. The water level in the Ganga basin has dropped from 53.8% to approximately 50.01%. Reservoirs in Madhya Pradesh have recorded a decline compared to last year. Even though Goa has only one major reservoir, there has been a decline of more than 12 percent, which is an important indicator of local water availability. Critical conditions have developed in several major reservoirs. Water levels in many major reservoirs across the country have dropped drastically.
