This day is celebrated as an important occasion to remind governments of their promises towards freedom of the press. The United Nations General Assembly had announced to celebrate World Press Freedom Day in the year 1993. This major decision was taken on the basis of a recommendation adopted at the 26th session of the UNESCO General Conference in 1991.

This day is a special opportunity for people associated with the media to consider the freedom of the press and the rules of their work. On this day, the status of press freedom around the world is examined and emphasis is laid on protecting the media from attacks. This day is also an important occasion to pay tribute to the brave journalists who lost their lives in the line of duty.

What is its importance for the world?

World Press Freedom Day has a direct and deep connection with the historical ‘Windhoek Declaration’ of 1991. UNESCO’s recommendation was actually the result of a demand by African journalists, who drafted the ‘Windhoek Declaration’ in 1991. The Windhoek Declaration is considered a benchmark for ensuring press freedom all over the world. It started with a seminar held in the city of Windhoek in 1991. In this seminar, African journalists and media people shared many important ideas among themselves.

His ideas served as a catalyst for promoting press freedom, independence and pluralism in Africa as well as the rest of the world. In this way, this entire day advocates to protect the rights of journalists and to provide them an environment to do their work without any fear. Explaining the importance of this day, Congress has raised questions on the current status of journalists in India and their 157th ranking. This entire matter once again emphasizes the need for an independent and fearless media in a democracy.
