Nepal: Taking a big step, the new government in Nepal has canceled more than 1,500 government appointments. According to reports, President Ramchandra Paudel implemented this decision by issuing an ordinance on Saturday. All these appointments were made before March 26, the day the new government was formed. The new government is headed by Balendra Shah, whose party won a landslide victory in the March 5 elections.

This victory came due to the growing anger against the old political parties after the Gen Z movement in September 2025. The government has promulgated an ordinance named Special Provisions for Removal of Public Office Bearers, 2083. Under this ordinance, all appointments made before March 26 will automatically stand cancelled, irrespective of their tenure or term.

With this decision, a total of 1,594 people have been removed from their posts. The government says that these appointments were made for political reasons and their removal will increase transparency and accountability. However, this step is also being criticized. Some people say that this will have a negative impact on government functioning. It is being said that work in areas like administration, education and health may be affected.

The work of many big government institutions like Nepal Electricity Authority, Tribhuvan University, BP Koirala Institute of Health Sciences, Nepal Airlines Corporation and Gorkhapatra will be affected. Many important posts are still vacant in these institutions, due to which there is a lack of leadership. In many places, the absence of officials may hamper daily work and file signing.

The government has not yet clarified when and how new appointments will be made. Another ordinance has been sent to the President, but in that also no clear process has been mentioned for all the institutions. Therefore, there is a possibility of administrative impact in future.
