Bengaluru: Former India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has weighed in on the controversial catch involving Jason Holder during the Indian Premier League 2026 clash between Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Gujarat Titans, offering a balanced perspective that has largely put the debate to rest.
The incident, which left Virat Kohli visibly frustrated on the field, centred around the dismissal of RCB captain Rajat Patidar. The decision sparked intense reactions from players and fans alike, with many questioning whether the ball had touched the ground before Holder completed the catch.
Controversial moment sparks debate
The drama unfolded when Patidar attempted a pull shot off pacer Arshad Khan, only to get a top edge. The ball travelled towards deep square leg, where Holder sprinted in from the boundary and completed a low diving catch.
While the on-field decision was given out, Kohli and the RCB camp were not convinced. Visuals suggested the possibility of the ball making contact with the turf, prompting Kohli to engage in an animated discussion with the fourth umpire.
Despite the protests, the third umpire upheld the decision, and Patidar had to walk back to the pavilion at a crucial stage of the innings.
Ashwin explains why catch looked fair
Sharing his views on his YouTube channel, Ashwin provided technical insight into the nature of such catches, pointing out that hand size and grip can often create misleading visuals.
“Jason Holder’s hands are twice as big as mine. In his hands, the ball almost disappears. So even if you can see the ball through the gap in his fingers, that does not mean it has hit the ground,” Ashwin explained.
He further suggested that Holder may have wrapped his fingers around the ball effectively, preventing it from touching the turf.
“The ball perhaps did not touch the ground,” he added, indicating that the decision could have been correct despite the controversy.
‘Depends on perspective,’ says Ashwin
Ashwin also acknowledged the emotional aspect of the incident, especially from the perspective of RCB supporters.
“If you are on the RCB side, you might feel unlucky. If you look at it from the Gujarat Titans side, it is a clean out. But if you are viewing it as a neutral, it is a completely fair catch,” he said.
His remarks highlight how high-pressure moments in cricket can often lead to differing interpretations, particularly when replays are inconclusive.
Match summary: GT outplay RCB
The dismissal proved to be a turning point in the match. Despite a solid start anchored by Kohli, RCB suffered a middle-order collapse and were bowled out for 155 in 19.2 overs.
Arshad Khan starred with the ball for Gujarat Titans, picking up three crucial wickets, while Rashid Khan and Holder chipped in with two wickets each to restrict the hosts to a modest total.
In reply, Gujarat Titans came out aggressively, led by captain Shubman Gill, who smashed 43 off just 18 balls. Jos Buttler continued the momentum with a brisk 39, putting RCB bowlers under pressure early in the chase.
Though RCB managed to pick up a few wickets in the middle overs, contributions from Rahul Tewatia and Rashid Khan ensured that Gujarat Titans crossed the finish line comfortably, sealing a four-wicket victory.
Conclusion
While the catch controversy dominated headlines, Ashwin’s expert analysis has brought clarity to the incident, suggesting that the decision was likely fair. The episode also underscores the fine margins in modern cricket, where split-second actions and camera angles can spark widespread debate.
For RCB, however, the focus will now shift to addressing their batting inconsistencies, while Gujarat Titans will take confidence from a well-rounded performance in a high-pressure game.
