Can foreigners buy land to build homestays in Vietnam?
An Australian wants to buy coastal land in central Vietnam to build a homestay but has been advised by a broker to “have a Vietnamese person hold the title,” leaving him uncertain.
Reader Jone Nguyen: I have an Australian partner who has long been interested in tourism investment in Vietnam. He has noticed that the homestay model in coastal localities shows strong growth potential. After researching the market, he plans to purchase a land plot in a central province to build and operate a homestay in the long term.
Through a broker, he was introduced to a residential land plot in a populated area and was told that he could “buy it and have a Vietnamese person hold the title” to facilitate the investment. This advice has raised concerns, so he asked me to help clarify several legal issues before making a decision.
So, can foreigners legally buy land in Vietnam to operate a homestay? If not, is there any lawful way to carry out this investment plan?
