Mahabharat Characters Satyavati: Satyavati appears as a very influential and decisive character in the story of Mahabharata. She was the wife of King Shantanu of Hastinapur and had an important contribution in laying the foundation of the entire Kuru dynasty. She is also called the ‘grandmother’ of Mahabharata, because her decisions later decided the direction of the entire history.

Birth and early life

The birth of Satyavati was an extraordinary event. According to mythology, she was the daughter of King Uparichar Vasu and an Apsara named Adrika (who turned into a fish due to a curse). Due to being born from a fish, his body smelled of fish, due to which he was called Matsyagandha. He was brought up by Nishadraj Dashraj, who gave him a normal life. She earned her living by boating.

Rishi Parashar and Vedvyas

One day while sailing a boat he met sage Parashar. With his blessings, Satyavati’s fishy smell changed into a divine fragrance and she came to be known as Yoganandha. From this union, Ved Vyas was born, who later became the author of a great book like Mahabharata.

Marriage with King Shantanu

King Shantanu was extremely impressed by Satyavati’s beauty and fragrance and wanted to marry her. But Satyavati’s father placed a condition that only his child would become the heir of Hastinapur. To fulfill this condition, Shantanu’s son Bhishma took a strict vow of lifelong celibacy, which is considered an example of the greatest sacrifice in history.

Satyavati and Shantanu had two sons, Chitrangad and Vichitravirya. But both died without an heir. In such a situation, Satyavati decided to take the dynasty forward by calling her first son Ved Vyas. It was through Vedvyas that Dhritarashtra, Pandu and Vidur were born, who later gave birth to the story of Mahabharata.

Satyavati is known as a determined and far-sighted woman. He saved the Kuru dynasty from extinction by taking right decisions in every difficult situation. Before the Mahabharata war, she had gone to the forest to do penance with Bhishma’s permission.
