All eyes will be on Hardik and Surya… MI needs to win to save playoff hopes
Mumbai: If Mumbai Indians want to keep alive their hopes of a tough road to make it to the Indian Premier League (IPL) playoffs, then their captain Hardik Pandya and key batsman Suryakumar Yadav will have to perform well in the match against bottom-placed Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) on Monday. The performance of Pandya (146 runs and four wickets) and Suryakumar (186) so far has been disappointing, due to which Mumbai has suffered a lot. Especially when former captain Rohit Sharma is not able to play due to hamstring strain. However, he is now on his way to comeback. Five-time IPL winners Mumbai Indians are ninth on the points table with just two wins from nine matches. His hopes of making it to the IPL playoffs are almost over.
Mumbai will have to win all their remaining matches and also pray for the results of other teams to remain in their favor to remain hopeful of qualifying. Its key players have not been able to perform well so far. Hardik’s captaincy has also come under question due to Mumbai’s poor performance. He has completely failed in terms of strategy. Mumbai’s batsmen have not been able to perform in unison while Hardik has had an ordinary performance with both bat and ball. Hardik’s performance in bowling has been up and down, but his batting needs a lot of improvement.
Suryakumar has failed to convert good starts into big scores, which is indeed a matter of concern as he is no longer able to dominate the bowlers like before. The captain of India’s T20 team did not perform well even in 2025. He had made a good start to 2026 but after that his bat did not work. He neither seems to be completely out of form nor has he been able to spend long time at the crease. Mumbai Indians and LSG have had similar performances this season. Both these teams are suffering from collective failure of the batsmen, which has tarnished their chances of reaching the last four to a great extent. LSG captain Rishabh Pant is also not performing well. His team has slipped to the bottom of the points table after losing five consecutive matches.
LSG bounced back with two consecutive wins after starting with a loss in the first match. However, when his team should have performed well, it could not do so. The performance of its bowlers has been excellent but the weakness of the batsmen is becoming a hindrance in its path.
In LSG’s last match, Mohsin Khan had taken five wickets for 23 runs but his brilliant effort could not get the team two points as the decision to send out-of-form Nicholas Pooran in the Super Over proved wrong. Captain Pant himself is standing at such a juncture where questions are being raised on his limited overs game. The Indian wicketkeeper-batsman will also face the challenge of turning the situation around for his team as LSG have a busy week with three matches to play in seven days.
The teams are as follows
