When was the airspace restriction lifted and why?
UAE’s General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) said that all temporary airspace restrictions have been lifted from 2 May 2026. In fact, on February 28, 2026, these restrictions were imposed as a security measure due to the tension and air strikes between America, Israel and Iran. This was followed by a conditional ceasefire on 8 April, after which authorities gradually resumed operations. After the safety check, GCAA found that there is no need to change the altitude limit or route, hence now the aircraft will be able to fly on the normal route.
What effect will this have on airlines and passengers?
With the lifting of restrictions, major airlines are now increasing their services. This will have a direct impact on travelers and migrants:
- Emirates: This airline was already operating with 65 percent capacity, now it will come at full capacity. Special flights between Europe and Asia will resume from May 5.
- flydubai and etihad: These airlines are also preparing to restart their stopped flights.
- Other Airlines: Qatar Airways and Kuwait Airways have said they will resume their full schedules by May 10.
- Benefits for expatriates: With the increase in the number of flights at Dubai (DXB) and Abu Dhabi (AUH) airports, passengers will get direct flights and waiting time will be reduced.
Will there be any change in the cost of air travel?
When restrictions were in place in UAE skies, a ‘war risk premium’ had to be paid for aircraft, which increased expenses. Now that the roads have opened and the security situation has become normal, this premium is expected to come down significantly. This will provide convenience to people traveling long distances and will make flight operations easier. However, GCAA has made it clear that if the security situation changes again, they can impose restrictions again.
