Big reversal in Bengal election trends: TMC’s account not even opened in four districts, BJP’s huge lead

Kolkata. A major political change is being seen in the initial trends of vote counting for the West Bengal Assembly Elections 2026. Amidst the ongoing counting of 293 seats, Trinamool Congress (TMC) is struggling to open its account in four districts of the state, while Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is maintaining a strong lead in many areas.

According to the trends, TMC is currently not seen gaining any seats in Alipurduar and Jalpaiguri in North Bengal and Jhargram and Paschim Bardhaman districts of South Bengal.

BJP’s lead in Jhargram-
As of 10:30 am, BJP candidates are leading in all four seats of Jhargram district—Nayagram, Gopiballavpur, Jhargram and Binpur (ST). This area is part of the tribal-dominated Jangalmahal area, which was earlier a CPI(M) stronghold and became a TMC stronghold after 2011.

BJP’s dominance in Terai and Dooars-
The BJP is also leading on all five seats in Alipurduar district—Kumargram (ST), Kalchini (ST), Alipurduar, Falakata (SC) and Madarihat (ST). BJP candidates are leading on all seven seats in Jalpaiguri district, which include Dhupguri, Maynaguri, Jalpaiguri, Rajganj, Dabgram-Phulbari, Mal and Nagarakata. The region is known for tea gardens and the tribal-Rajbanshi vote bank, which play an important role in the results.

BJP ahead in Paschim Bardhaman also-
The BJP is leading on all seven seats in the industrial district of Paschim Bardhaman—Pandabeshwar, Durgapur East, Durgapur West, Raniganj, Jamuria, Asansol South and Asansol North. The special thing is that BJP MLA Agnimitra Paul is also leading in Asansol South seat.

This trend is indicating a major change in political equations in this region famous for coal and steel industry.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had claimed during the election campaign that this time there will be many districts in West Bengal where TMC will not even be able to open its account. Initial trends seem to be pointing in the same direction, although the complete picture will be clear only after the final results.
