With this, the 77-year old DMK rule seems to be coming to an end, and Thalapathy Vijay is being seen as the next Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. Vijay leaving his film career and entering politics and achieving such huge success by contesting elections for the first time shows his popularity.

Journey from child artist to Thalapathy

Born on June 22, 1974, Vijay’s real name is Joseph Vijay Chandrashekhar. He belongs to a film family; His father S.A. Chandrashekhar is a director and mother Shobha Chandrashekhar is a playback singer. Vijay started his career as a child artiste in 1984 and appeared as the hero in the film ‘Naalaiya Theerpu’ in 1992. After this his popularity increased rapidly. The 1994 film ‘Rasigan’ gave him the name Ilayathalapathy, which later changed to Thalapathy. Till now, he has worked in 69 films, which include hits like ‘Theri’, ‘Rajavin Paravayile’, ‘Minsara Kanna’, ‘Beast’ and ‘Shahjahan’.

Thalapathy Vijay’s political journey

Vijay founded his fan club ‘Vijay Makkal Ayyakam’ in 2009, which supported the AIADMK alliance in the 2011 assembly elections. However, in February 2019 he criticized the Citizenship Amendment Act 2019, saying it would disturb the socio-religious harmony of the country. His fan club won 115 seats in the 2022 local elections. Subsequently, on 2 February 2024, Vijay announced his political party ‘Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam’. He was thrust into controversy when a stampede during his rally in Karur on 27 September 2025 resulted in the death of 41 people. Nevertheless, Vijay has proved his political popularity in the assembly elections.
