What is the salary of MLAs?

Bengal: MLAs get different salaries in each state. Let’s talk about West Bengal first. In 2023, the Mamata Banerjee government announced an increase in the salaries of MLAs by Rs 40,000 per month. After this increase, the salary of MLAs here has increased to Rs 1.21 lakh per month.

Assam: In 2018, the salary of Assam MLAs was increased. Salary increased from Rs 1.07 lakh to Rs 1.60 lakh. Currently MLAs here get Rs 1.60 lakh per month including salary and allowances.

Tamil Nadu: The total monthly salary and allowances of Tamil Nadu MLAs is up to ₹150,000. This includes basic salary of ₹105,000 per month along with constituency allowance, telephone allowance and vehicle allowance.

Kerala: Kerala is one of the states where salaries and allowances of MLAs are very low. Here an MLA gets ₹70,000 per month.

Puducherry: An MLA here gets ₹1,05,000 per month as salary and allowances. They are entitled to a daily allowance of ₹2,500 for attending meetings and an enhanced pension of ₹31,000 per month after the end of tenure.

How is the salary increased?

Each state government fixes the salaries and allowances of MLAs. Wages are regularly increased to take account of inflation through amendments in the State Wages and Allowances Act. In most cases, a salary increase is recommended by a committee. Apart from their basic salary, MLAs also get allowances for constituency work, hiring assistants and telephone bills. MLAs also get many perks like government accommodation, free travel across the country, medical facilities and loans to buy vehicles.
