Center approves Mission for Cotton Productivity, cotton sector will get strength

New Delhi. The Central Government has taken a big decision to strengthen the cotton sector. On Tuesday, the Union Cabinet approved the “Mission for Cotton Productivity”, for which a provision of Rs 5,659.22 crore has been made. This mission will be implemented from 2026–27 to 2030–31.

This scheme was approved in the cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. According to the government, its objective is to increase cotton production, improve quality and make India competitive in the global textile market.

Giving information about the decisions of the Cabinet, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnav said that

This mission will work under the “5F Vision” of the government (Farm to Fiber to Factory to Fashion to Foreign). Through this, high yielding, pest and disease safe and climate friendly seeds will be developed. Also, high density planting system and modern farming techniques will be adopted on a large scale.

He said that under this scheme, development of high quality and pest-resistant seeds, expansion of modern farming techniques, modernization of ginning and processing units to improve the quality of cotton, along with setting up of modern testing labs across the country will be done. Along with this, branding and traceability under “Kasturi Cotton Bharat” will be promoted and farmers will be linked to digital markets to get better prices. Will be available for which Agriculture Ministry and Textile Ministry will jointly implement it. Institutions like ICAR and CSIR will also participate in this.

Vaishnav said that initially 140 districts of 14 states and about 2000 ginning and processing units will be covered under this mission. About 32 lakh farmers are expected to benefit from this scheme.

The government aims to increase cotton production to 498 lakh bales and productivity from 440 kg per hectare to 755 kg per hectare by 2031.
