Bank Strike May 2026: Employees of State Bank of India (SBI), India’s largest public sector lender, have announced a two-day nationwide strike to protect employee rights, ensure fair working conditions and protect the interests of both staff and customers. ‘Workman’ category employees of SBI will remain on strike on May 25 and 26, 2026.

The strike has been called by the All India State Bank of India Staff Federation (AISBISF), which announced a two-day nationwide strike citing unresolved staff grievances and alleged non-implementation of agreements.

In a notice addressed to the Chairman of SBI dated May 2, 2026, AISBISF said that ‘Workman’ category employees will take part in this strike under the provisions of the ‘Industrial Disputes Act, 1947’. If either of these two dates falls on a holiday, the strike will be called on the next day, i.e. May 27, 2026.

What are the demands of the employees?

According to the federation’s letter, there are a total of 16 demands that they are demanding to be met. AISBISF said, “Workmen’s rights are being systematically trampled upon. Hard-earned protections won over decades of struggle are being weakened, ignored and disregarded. Agreements have become mere formalities, and voices of protest are being sidelined.”

The demands raised by the federation include recruitment of messengers and armed guards, adequate staffing, and stopping outsourcing of permanent posts. AISBISF has also highlighted issues like pension related concerns under the National Pension System, and lack of inter-circle transfer for employees recruited after 2019.

Meanwhile, ahead of a nationwide strike on 25 and 26 May, the federation will hold a lunchtime demonstration on 5 May and withdraw additional support; Will run a campaign on social media on May 6; Will hold a press conference at LHOs/AO centers on 7th May; And on May 8, there will be a silent protest at all LHO/AO/RBO centres.

On May 11, employees will hold a centralized demonstration at lunch time at all LHO/AO/R centres. BO District Headquarters Centre. On May 18, they will hold a sit-in at all LHO/AO centres, and on May 19 will submit a memorandum to Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman.

Ahead of the planned two-day strike, SBI employees will submit a memorandum to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on May 21.
