Senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader from West Bengal Dilip Ghosh took a dig at Mamata Banerjee, the outgoing West Bengal chief minister, over the latter refusing to quit following the defeat in the 2026 Assembly elections.

Ghosh, who returned as an MLA in the state Assembly after seven years, hit out at the Trinamool Congress (TMC) supremo, calling her “(Donald) Trump in a sari”. He recalled the 2021 Capitol Hill violence in the US, after the US president allegedly instigated a mob to protest his defeat in the 2020 presidential elections.
‘Only Mamata’s victory is moral?’
Speaking to reporters on Tuesday (May 5), Ghosh, a former state BJP chief, reacted to Mamata’s claim that the BJP’s win was “immoral”, asking whether only a TMC victory could be called “moral”.
“He/she who doesn’t acknowledge people’s mandate has no place in politics. She (Mamata) is Trump in a sari. Just like Trump did not want to leave after losing, he deployed his own people to create chaos. Mamata would have done the same had the Election Commission not been strict,” Ghosh, who won from Kharagpur Sadar by over 30,000 votes, said.

The BJP veteran’s remarks came after Mamata announced at a press conference at her residence in Kalighat that there was no question of her quitting, claiming that the BJP won the election immorally by stealing seats.
This is not the first time that Ghosh has compared the TMC supremo with Trump. In early 2021, he accused the outgoing Bengal CM of displaying a “dictatorial behaviour” comparable with Trump.
Mamata also lost from her den, Bhabanipur, in Kolkata, in this election against the BJP’s Suvendu Adhikari, who could replace her as the next chief minister of Bengal.
