Beijing:Two former defense ministers of China have been sentenced to death. Former defense ministers Wei Fenghe and Li Shangfu, who were sentenced to death, were accused of corruption. The statement did not mention the exact amount of bribes involved in these cases.
The statement revealed that both men were sentenced to death with a two-year reprieve, permanent deprivation of political rights and confiscation of all their personal properties. It further states that after the expiry of the two-year grace period, his sentence will be commuted to life imprisonment. In which there will be no possibility of reduction in punishment or parole.
Death sentence to two former defense ministers
These sentences are the harshest punishments given to senior military officers since Chinese President Xi Jinping launched his anti-corruption campaign in 2012. Li served as China’s Minister of National Defense from March to October 2023. He has the distinction of being the shortest serving Defense Minister of China.
Li was personally selected by Xi Jinping for a top defense post. After Lee was removed from office, several top officials of the Rocket Force were also dismissed on corruption charges. Since coming to power in 2012, President Xi has led a massive anti-corruption campaign.
