Mamata Banerjee is no longer CM, Governor RN Ravi dissolved the West Bengal Assembly.

A major constitutional development was seen in the politics of West Bengal on Thursday. Governor RN Ravi issued an order to dissolve the state assembly from 7 May 2026. With this the tenure of the Mamata Banerjee led government formally ended. This decision is considered very important after the defeat of Trinamool Congress in the recent assembly elections. Let us tell you that Mamta Didi had refused to resign, after which this step was taken.

In the results of West Bengal Assembly elections declared on May 4, 2026, BJP performed brilliantly and won a huge majority. The party won a total of 207 seats. Whereas Mamata Banerjee led TMC was reduced to only 80 seats this time. Apart from this, Congress and Humayun Kabir’s party AJUP got 2-2 seats, while CPI(M) and AISF won 1-1 seat.

Governor issued official order

In the notification issued by Raj Bhavan, information about dissolution of the Assembly was given citing Article 174 (2) (b) of the Constitution. The order said that the West Bengal Assembly is dissolved with immediate effect from May 7, 2026. This assembly was formed in May 2021, when Mamata Banerjee returned to power for the third consecutive time. Now after the completion of the five-year term, the process of formation of the new assembly has started.

Controversy increased over not resigning

It is noteworthy that after the election results came, Mamata Banerjee adopted a tough attitude and refused to accept defeat. In a press conference, he had termed these results as ‘not a mandate of the people but a big conspiracy’. She had bluntly said, ‘I have not lost, so I will not resign.’ His stance had created an unprecedented political confrontation in the state, but after the dissolution of the assembly, the powers of his government and the Chief Minister have automatically ended.
