New Delhi: In West Bengal, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has achieved a historic victory for the first time, ousting Mamata Banerjee, who had held power for 15 years. Following the BJP’s triumph, the outcome is now being viewed as a harbinger of change in West Bengal. Concurrently, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP)—currently governing in Bangladesh—has welcomed the BJP’s victory in West Bengal.

Applauding the BJP’s performance under the leadership of Suvendu Adhikari, the party expressed hope that the Teesta water-sharing agreement—pending for decades—would now soon become a reality. Interestingly, they characterized Mamata Banerjee as the single greatest obstacle to this agreement.

BNP Congratulates Suvendu Adhikari on His Victory

Credit for the BJP’s victory in West Bengal is being attributed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah, as well as to Suvendu Adhikari. In this context, Azizul Bari Helal—the Information Secretary of the ruling BNP in Bangladesh—formally extended his congratulations to Suvendu Adhikari and the BJP on this victory.

He expressed confidence that the change of power in Bengal would mark the beginning of a new chapter in the relationship between Bangladesh and West Bengal. Helal further stated that a government led by Suvendu Adhikari would serve to further strengthen cordial relations between the two sides. According to the party, this victory will prove instrumental in stabilizing bilateral ties and enhancing cooperation.

Mamata Banerjee Was the Real Obstacle to the Teesta Barrage’

The most striking aspect of the BNP’s statement concerns the Teesta water-sharing issue. The party has directly identified the Trinamool Congress and Mamata Banerjee’s previous administration as the primary impediments to this agreement. According to the BNP Secretary, Mamata Banerjee has stood as a major roadblock in the path of finalizing the Teesta Barrage agreement. Furthermore, the BNP asserts that with the BJP’s rise to power, this long-awaited project will now be successfully implemented.

Why the Teesta Water-Sharing Agreement Is Stalled

The dispute over the Teesta River has remained a sensitive issue between India and Bangladesh for over a decade. During the visit of the then-Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in 2011, a proposal for an agreement was put forward, under which 37.5% of the Teesta’s water was to be allocated to Bangladesh and 42.5% to India.

At that time, the then-government of Bengal strongly opposed this agreement, citing agricultural interests. Currently, India and Bangladesh share 54 rivers; however, only the Ganges Water Treaty and the Kushiyara River Treaty are currently in effect. The Teesta Treaty remains pending due to the lack of consent from West Bengal.
