Leslie Hilton’s cricket journey

West Indies cricketer Leslie Hilton was a fast bowler, who was known for his sharp bowling on the field. He was born in a poor family. Leslie’s early life was full of struggles, but he was full of passion for cricket. After losing his parents in his childhood, his aunt raised him. Leslie Hilton also had to work as a laborer and tailor, but he did not stop playing cricket.

Seeing this, a local club extended a helping hand to him. After this Leslie Hilton arrived in the world of cricket. Leslie Hilton worked hard for years, after which she finally got a chance in the senior West Indies team. He made his Test debut against England in 1935. Leslie Hilton played only 6 test matches for West Indies, in which he took 16 wickets.

Wife cheated on Leslie

After getting success in cricket, Leslie Hilton married Lurline Rose of Jamaica in the year 1942. After marriage, everything was going well between Leslie and Lurleen for a few years, but then there was a rift in their relationship. Leslie Hilton started becoming suspicious of his wife. This suspicion turned into reality the day Hilton received an anonymous letter. In that letter it was written about Hilton’s wife’s affair with a New York man, Roy Francis.

At that time, Lerlin used to go to New York every day for business. Hilton was quite shocked after knowing about this. Because of this Hilton got very angry. After this, when Lurleen Rose returned from New York, Hilton asked questions about the affair. Lurleen Rose initially denied it, but then accepted it.

Why did Leslie get death sentence?

On the morning of May 17, 1954, there was a heated argument inside the house between Hilton and his wife in Kingston, Jamaica. The argument between the two escalated, after which Leslie Hilton lost her temper. Leslie took out his service revolver and fired a volley of bullets at Lerlin Rose. Hilton shot Lerlin 7 times, killing him on the spot.

This news spread rapidly throughout the world including West Indies in no time.
Leslie Hilton was sentenced to death in this case. On May 17, 1955, exactly a year after the murder, Leslie Hilton was hanged in a prison in Jamaica. With this he became the first cricketer in cricket history to be hanged.
