Available with new fuel options

The car is now likely to be available with a new type of fuel option. The company has introduced one such variant of this car, which is equipped with a hydrogen engine. The vehicle was showcased at the ‘2026 Vienna Motor Symposium’.

How does a hydrogen car work?

These vehicles use ‘Hydrogen Fuel Cells’ to generate electricity from hydrogen. This hydrogen is stored in a tank in the car. The electricity generated is used to charge the battery, which in turn powers the electric motors installed in the car. Thus, the hydrogen car works on the road. The entire process emits nothing but water, meaning there is no need to worry about pollution.
But technology is now advancing, making it possible to use hydrogen directly as a fuel, meaning that it no longer needs to be converted into electricity. Mobility technology company ‘AVL’ and ‘Suzuki Motor Corporation’ have achieved a significant breakthrough in the field of hydrogen engines.

The company is showcasing this technology at the 2026 ‘Vienna Motor Symposium’. This technology will be demonstrated in a ‘Suzuki Swift’. This prototype will run on a hydrogen engine. A system the company calls “Hydrogen DI Technology”. AVL’s system is integrated into Suzuki’s 1.4-liter, four-cylinder hydrogen engine.

What is the current situation in India?

Currently, hydrogen powered cars are not sold in India. But it is impossible to predict exactly which direction the auto industry will take in the future. Union Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari has been consistently emphasizing on promoting green fuels and reducing the ‘carbon footprint’ in India. Currently, electric and hybrid vehicles are being widely promoted across the country. Additionally, plans to increase the ethanol blending ratio are also being considered. In this context, hydrogen can emerge as an excellent and viable alternative. Interestingly, a hydrogen fueling station has recently been set up at the Cochin airport. The facility has been built to meet the fuel requirements of hydrogen-powered buses and other vehicles plying within the airport premises.
