Bollywood’s most tragic film ‘Love and God’

Unique journey of the film

Some films in the history of Bollywood become not just entertainment but also a unique story of destiny. One such film is ‘Love and God’, which is based on the immortal love story of Laila-Majnu. It took 23 years to make this film. The most shocking thing is that even before its release, its director, lead actor and many other artists had left this world.

Film’s beginnings and challenges

This film started in 1963. Famous director K. Asif, who had made classics like ‘Mughal-e-Azam’, was making this project with his passion. Guru Dutt was in the first lead role, and a lot of shooting had also been done. But Guru Dutt died suddenly in 1964, which gave the first major blow to the film. After this Sanjeev Kumar was cast as the hero. But in 1971 K. Asif also passed away, due to which the work on the film came to a halt.

game of luck

Of. Asif’s wife, Akhtar Asif, took the responsibility of completing the film. But luck cheated again. Sanjeev Kumar also died in 1985. Now there was neither a director nor a lead actor. The film was finally released in 1986 after 23 years of hard work. This was accomplished through body doubles, old footage and reels. But at the time of release neither Guru Dutt, nor Sanjeev Kumar nor K. Asif. The film got the tag of ‘wretched’.

box office failure

‘Love and God’ did not get the support of the audience. The film failed miserably at the box office and soon faded into oblivion. A long journey of 23 years, the death of three leading personalities and the failure in the end made ‘Love and God’ one of the most tragic films of Bollywood.
