Cycling: India win team pursuit gold at UCI Grand Prix Tashkent

India’s men’s track cycling team clinched gold in the Elite Team Pursuit event at the UCI Class 2 Grand Prix Tashkent held in Tashkent on May 6.

The Indian quartet of Harshveer Sekhon, Sahil Kumar, Dinesh Kumar and Vishavjeet Singh secured the top podium spot in the 4000m team pursuit event, a high-intensity endurance discipline requiring coordinated pacing and rotations among four riders.

The competition, sanctioned by the Union Cycliste Internationale, awards valuable ranking points and featured elite cyclists from multiple nations.

Harshveer adds individual bronze in omnium

Apart from the team gold, Sekhon also claimed bronze in the men’s elite omnium event with 137 points. The omnium combines four endurance disciplines, scratch race, tempo race, elimination race and points race, testing consistency and tactical versatility across formats.

Sekhon, a former national champion roller skater from Punjab, has emerged as one of India’s leading endurance cyclists in recent years, with multiple Asian-level medals and appearances at international competitions.

The gold-winning squad also reflected the depth of India’s current cycling setup. Sahil Kumar, an Indian Air Force rider and Commonwealth Games participant, brought extensive experience, while Dinesh Kumar continued his rise after progressing from grassroots cycling in Odisha to the national team.

Vishavjeet Singh, the youngest member of the quartet, added strength to the pursuit lineup with his growing experience in track and road events.

India’s performance in Tashkent marks another positive step for the country’s track cycling programme as it continues to gain visibility on the international circuit.
