Surabhi Das on leaving TV stability for OTT risks: “The script chooses me, but the role must matter”
Actor Surabhi Das has opened up about stepping away from the stability of television to explore the uncertain world of OTT and films, calling the move both instinctive and emotionally challenging. Best known for her television work, Surabhi said the transition was driven by a desire to evolve creatively rather than remain comfortable in a predictable space.
Speaking about her OTT debut in Carnaame: Badla Gear Palti Kismat, the actor admitted that she is still at a stage in her career where projects “choose” her rather than the other way around.
“The script chooses me, the casting director decides if they want to audition me, and the director decides if I’m right for the part,” Surabhi said while discussing her evolving career choices.
Choosing Meaningful Roles Over Screen Time
Surabhi explained that her priorities have changed significantly as she enters the OTT and film space. According to her, screen time matters less now than the importance of the character within the story.
“I don’t want to do characters that don’t make a difference. Even if it’s just two scenes, those scenes should matter,” she said.
The actor revealed that she now focuses on roles that leave an impact on the narrative instead of simply appearing in projects for visibility.
Leaving Television Was Not Easy
The actor acknowledged that leaving television came with major risks because TV offered financial security, continuous work, and stability.
“Television gives you stability — a monthly income and constant work. Leaving that meant stepping into uncertainty,” she said.
Despite the fear involved, Surabhi said she felt it was the right moment to experiment and challenge herself creatively.
According to her, staying in television would have been the safer and more practical decision, but moving toward OTT and films happened more through instinct than planning.
Adapting to OTT Performance Style
Surabhi also spoke about the major differences between acting for television and performing in OTT projects and films.
She explained that television performances often require amplified emotions due to dramatic storytelling formats, whereas OTT platforms demand subtlety and realism.
“In serials, we overplay, but in OTT and films, everything is more natural and understated,” she said.
The actor noted that she had to consciously change her dialogue delivery, pauses, and expressions to adapt to the more intimate style of camera work used in digital storytelling.
Simultaneously Entering OTT and Big-Screen Cinema
Apart from her OTT debut, Surabhi is also part of director Nitesh Tiwari’s ambitious film Ramayana, where she plays the role of Urmila. She described both projects as completely different experiences requiring separate emotional and physical preparation.
According to Surabhi, costumes, body language, and the world of the character naturally influence her performance process.
“I’m Happy I Took the Risk”
Looking back at her decision, Surabhi said she feels satisfied that she stepped outside her comfort zone despite the uncertainty involved.
“I wanted to try something new, even if it didn’t work out,” she shared.
The actor added that she remains excited about exploring meaningful stories across OTT and film platforms while continuing to grow as a performer in different formats.
