Thalapathy Vijay takes command of Tamil Nadu, gives big political signals by sharing stage with Rahul Gandhi

Chennai. A historic moment in Tamil Nadu politics was witnessed at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium on Sunday when Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK) chief Thalapathy Vijay took oath as the Chief Minister. Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar administered him the oath of office and secrecy. During this time, the presence of Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on the stage gave rise to new discussions in political circles.

TVK surprised everyone by emerging as the largest party with a stellar performance in the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. Although the party remained a few seats away from majority on its own, as soon as the election results came, Congress announced its support to Vijay. After this, Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) and Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) also strengthened the Vijay-led alliance by extending unconditional support.
With the support of allies, the alliance achieved the figure of 120 MLAs and formed the government.

The closeness of Rahul Gandhi and Thalapathy Vijay was a special topic of discussion at the swearing-in ceremony. It is being told that Vijay himself had invited Rahul Gandhi to attend the function. This was the reason why Congress first supported TVK. Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge also played an important role in bringing other opposition parties together.

According to political analysts, Rahul Gandhi’s arrival on the victory stage is not just a formal presence but is being considered as a big message of opposition unity in South India. Congress has been with DMK in Tamil Nadu for a long time, but sharing the stage with Vijay is pointing towards new political equations in the times to come.

Experts believe that Vijay’s youth popularity and Rahul Gandhi’s national identity coming together on one platform can also be the initial strategy of 2029 politics. This picture has also indicated that Vijay no longer wants to be limited to Tamil Nadu only, but is preparing to establish his strong presence in national politics as well.

During the ceremony, Vijay took oath as Chief Minister in the name of God amid cheers and slogans of TVK workers. He was accompanied by TVK leaders Aadhav Arjun, N Anand and K. A. Many leaders including Sengottaiyan took oath as ministers. The special thing was that the ministers also took oath in the name of God, which is considered different from the style of the previous DMK government.
