Why was West Ham’s goal vs Arsenal ruled out?
The Hammers equalised through Callum Wilson during second-half stoppage-time through a chaotic passage of play from a corner. However, the Arsenal players and dugout appealed to the officials, pointing to potential foul play in the build-up.
The Video Assistant Referee (VAR) then adjudged that a foul was committed on Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya by substitute Pablo. His arm was adjudged to obstruct the ‘keeper during the move which led to the goal being disallowed.
West Ham manager Nuno Espirito Santo criticised the decision and said: “Everyone involved in football has lost part of their ability to distinguish what is a foul and what is not, and that’s why we are frustrated. Sometimes matches turn into wrestling fights, and that creates confusion over what should and shouldn’t be given as a foul. You simply cannot understand the inconsistency in the decisions.”
The Gunners went on to bag a 1-0 win to move five-points clear at the top of the table.
