Gaikwad hails CSK commitment after 200-plus chase

Chennai: Chennai Super Kings (CSK) skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad praised his team’s “commitment and determination” after they pulled off a rare 200-plus chase to defeat Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) by five wickets in a high-scoring IPL 2026 clash at the MA Chidambaram Stadium.

Chasing a formidable target of 204, CSK completed the task with four balls to spare, marking their first successful chase of a 180-plus total since 2019. The win lifted CSK to fifth place in the points table, keeping their playoff hopes alive.

Rare successful chase boosts CSK

Gaikwad admitted that chasing a total above 200 is always challenging and usually stretches till the final overs. However, he expressed satisfaction at the way his team handled the pressure.

“Yes, it got close, but when you are chasing 200, it often goes deep into the innings. It’s been a while since we chased such a total, so it feels good to get the job done,” Gaikwad said after the match.

CSK got off to a strong start in the Powerplay, which laid the foundation for the chase. Despite some middle-order pressure, the team maintained composure to eventually cross the finish line.

Urvil Patel’s record knock steals show

The highlight of the chase was a sensational innings by Urvil Patel, who smashed a record-breaking 13-ball fifty. His explosive knock turned the momentum decisively in CSK’s favour and left the opposition struggling to contain the scoring rate.

The aggressive approach ensured that CSK stayed ahead of the required rate, even as wickets fell at regular intervals in the middle overs.

Bowlers stage comeback after LSG’s strong start

Earlier in the match, CSK’s bowlers faced a tough challenge as LSG got off to a flying start. Josh Inglis played a blistering knock of 85, putting the visitors in a commanding position.

However, Gaikwad revealed that a key message during the first strategic time-out helped shift momentum back in CSK’s favour.

“After the first time-out, Sanju came in and said that if we have it in us, we should make a comeback and try to restrict them. That really pumped everyone,” he said.

Jamie Overton led the bowling effort with a three-wicket haul, while Noor Ahmad provided crucial support during the middle overs. Their disciplined spells between overs six and ten helped pull things back after LSG looked set for a much bigger total.

Tactical execution turns the game

Gaikwad highlighted the importance of smart bowling strategies in controlling the damage. He noted that the team focused on attacking from one end while maintaining defensive control from the other.

“We felt they were 15 to 30 runs ahead after the Powerplay. So we planned to use our best bowlers in the next few overs and reassess. That phase really helped us get back into the game,” he explained.

The bowlers’ ability to pick timely wickets ensured that LSG were restricted to 203, a total that proved just within CSK’s reach.

Praise for Josh Inglis’ innings

Despite the defeat, Gaikwad lauded LSG batter Josh Inglis for his outstanding performance.

“Hats off to Josh. He played some incredible shots which we didn’t have answers for. It was an amazing knock,” he said.

Inglis’ innings was the cornerstone of LSG’s total and kept the pressure firmly on CSK throughout the chase.

Focus shifts to recovery and next clash

Looking ahead, Gaikwad stressed the importance of recovery, especially given the challenging weather conditions and a tight schedule.

“It’s been very hot and humid, and some players needed the break. We will use this time to recover and also focus on improving in key areas during practice,” he said.

CSK are set to face LSG again in the reverse fixture in Lucknow on May 15, making preparation and fitness crucial in the lead-up to the match.

Conclusion

CSK’s successful 200-plus chase reflects a strong turnaround driven by commitment, tactical awareness, and individual brilliance. Urvil Patel’s explosive innings and the bowlers’ comeback laid the foundation for a memorable victory.

With momentum on their side, CSK will look to build on this performance as the IPL 2026 season heads towards its decisive phase, while LSG will aim to bounce back in the upcoming reverse fixture.
