Preußen Münster relegated from Bundesliga 2
Preußen Münster have been demoted to the third division following their 1-1 draw with Darmstadt and Fortuna Düsseldorf’s surprise win over Elversberg, bringing to an end a two-year stint in Bundesliga 2.
Alois Schwartz’s side have spent the majority of the campaign in the relegation zone, earning three points just once since the turn of the year. Sunday’s stalemate at the LVM-Preußenstadion – Münster’s ninth match in a row without a victory – allied to Düsseldorf’s positive result, mathematically confirmed their relegation to the third tier.
Schwartz was appointed in late March, but the task of steering the club to safety proved a daunting one for the former Karslruhe and Nuremburg coach, despite overseeing some creditable performances, such as a dramatic and hard-fought 3-3 draw away at promotion chasers Hannover on Matchday 32.

Prior to Sunday’s duel with Darmstadt, Schwartz had been in a forthright mood at the pre-match press conference, stating, “We have to put in a good performance and get luck on our side. We have to win.”
Unfortunately for the veteran coach and his charges, Isac Lidberg’s 15th-minute equaliser for the Lilies, coupled with Jorrit Hendrix’s untimely red card 13 minutes later, ultimately put paid to their hopes of survival.

Münster will therefore, after an eventful two-year stay in Bundesliga 2, kick off the 2026/27 season in the third division, where they will likely to be among the pre-season promotion favourites.
The identity of the club or clubs joining them is still to be determined, with Arminia Bielefeld and Greuther Fürth respectively occupying 16th and 17th position going into what promises to be an exciting final day.
