Durga Pandal ‘King’, close to Mamata Banerjee, Sujit Bose arrested as soon as the government changed.

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government has been formed in West Bengal. There has been an uproar over the arrest of a leader just after the formation of the government. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Monday arrested senior Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader and former Fire and Emergency Services Minister Sujit Bose. He was arrested after more than 10 hours of interrogation in the investigation of the municipal recruitment scam.

The allegation against Sujit Bose was that his statements were changing again and again, he was not ready to cooperate. The agency was facing difficulties, so he has been arrested. As soon as the investigating agency arrested him, there is an uproar over his arrest. Trinamool Congress is calling it an act of revenge.

Who is Sujit Bose?

Sujit Bose has been MLA from Bidhannagar seat. Won from here for the first time in 2009 and had been winning continuously since then. He had to face defeat in the assembly elections 2026. This is the first case after the TMC defeat when a TMC leader has been arrested. Local people in Bidhannagar had expressed their displeasure with Bose and the TMC government. Due to problems like dilapidated roads, non-collection of garbage and waterlogging during rains, Bose lost by 37,330 votes.

Why is Sujit Bose in the news?

Sujit Bose is one of the big Durga Puja organizers of Kolkata. He used to organize big tableaux at Shribhoomi Sporting Club, due to which sometimes the traffic on VIP Road came to a complete standstill. Once the then Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had warned him that if the traffic towards the airport was affected then he would be stopped.

How has your political journey been?

Sujit Bose was earlier associated with CPI(M). He was trusted by Subhash Chakraborty, who was a minister in the Left government. After the rift in 2001, he joined Trinamool Congress. In 2006, he contested the elections against Subhash Chakraborty, but lost. In 2009, Subhash Chakraborty became MLA for the first time. He was made a minister after winning the 2021 elections. Sujit Bose is close to Mamata Banerjee and is one of the popular leaders of North Bengal.

In which scam is Sujit Bose trapped?

The case in which Sujit Bose has been arrested is of 2023. Irregularities were revealed in the recruitment of government aided schools. About 5000 people were provided permanent jobs in about 60 municipalities of the state. Many municipalities around Kolkata, South Dum Dum, Kamarhati, Panihati, North Dum Dum and Baranagar etc. are under the ambit of this scam.

ED had sent summons to Sujit Bose several times. He had also received summons during the election campaign in April-May 2026. In October 2025, the ED had raided Bose’s Salt Lake office, his son’s restaurant, the house of aide Nitai Dutta and the houses of some chartered accountants.

Why is it being criticized?

Chief Minister Shubhendu Adhikari has promised to form a commission headed by a retired judge to investigate all corruption cases of the TMC regime. The arrest of Sujit Bose is being considered as the initial step of this campaign.
