‘Guess Paper’ Leaks Forces NEET 2026 To Be Postponed For 24 Lakh Students
India’s biggest medical entrance examination has once again plunged into controversy. The National Testing Agency (NTA) has officially cancelled NEET-UG 2026 after evidence emerged that a widely circulated “guess paper” closely matched the actual examination conducted on May 3.
The unprecedented decision affects more than 24 lakh aspirants across India who were competing for nearly 2 lakh medical and allied healthcare seats including MBBS, BDS, AYUSH, and veterinary programmes.
More Than 100 Questions Allegedly Matched
According to investigation reports, authorities discovered that over 100 questions from Biology and Chemistry sections allegedly matched questions circulating earlier in “guess papers” distributed in parts of Rajasthan and Uttarakhand.
Investigators reportedly found that the leaked material could account for nearly 600 marks out of the total 720-mark examination — a shocking revelation for a highly competitive exam where even one mark can change rankings dramatically.
The Rajasthan Special Operations Group (SOG) first began probing suspicious similarities after receiving complaints from coaching networks and local authorities. The investigation later expanded across multiple states, including Maharashtra connections.
NTA Forced To Scrap Entire Exam
Initially, the NTA stated the matter was under investigation. However, mounting evidence, student outrage, and political pressure ultimately forced the agency to cancel the entire examination.
The agency said fresh exam dates and revised guidelines will be announced separately.
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has now reportedly taken over the case to investigate:
- How the paper leaked
- Who distributed the guess papers
- Whether organized rackets were involved
- Possible links with coaching centres and insiders
India’s Exam System Under Pressure Again
This controversy has reignited concerns about the credibility of India’s examination ecosystem.
NEET is among the world’s largest entrance exams:
- Over 24 lakh students appear annually
- Competition exists for roughly 1 lakh MBBS seats
- Success rates remain below 5% for government medical colleges
India has witnessed repeated exam leak controversies in recent years involving:
- NEET 2024
- SSC recruitment exams
- State PSC exams
- Railway recruitment tests
- CBSE papers
Experts say high competition, limited seats, massive coaching ecosystems, and digital distribution networks have created a large underground “paper leak economy.”
Students Protest Across India
Following the cancellation announcement, protests erupted in multiple cities including Delhi. Student groups demanded accountability from the NTA and stronger safeguards for future examinations.
Opposition leaders also attacked the government over repeated exam controversies, arguing that repeated leaks are damaging the future of millions of students.
For aspirants, the biggest concern now is uncertainty:
- When will the re-exam happen?
- Will preparation cycles need restarting?
- Can the next exam be trusted?
Bigger Than Just One Exam
The cancellation of NEET-UG 2026 is not just an education scandal — it is becoming a national governance issue.
India’s highly competitive exam system determines the careers of millions of students every year. Every leak, delay, or cancellation weakens trust in meritocracy and increases emotional, financial, and psychological pressure on families.
The bigger question now is whether India can build a truly leak-proof, transparent examination system — or whether paper leaks will continue haunting the country’s most important exams.
