Amid Iran war, US is going to make a big deal in the Bay of Bengal! Trump played a new trick in India’s neighborhood!

US Navy Ship Near India: Possible defense agreements between Bangladesh and America in the Bay of Bengal have given a new turn to the strategic politics of South Asia. According to reports, the important defense deal between the two countries has reached the final stage. After these agreements, the US Army can get direct access to the major ports and airfields of Bangladesh. The entire region, including India, is keeping an eye on this development, because it may affect the regional balance of power.

Which agreements are being negotiated?

According to the report of analytical center ‘SOLID INFO’, negotiations between America and Bangladesh regarding two major defense agreements—GSOMIA and ACSA—are almost completed. In May 2026, a delegation of the US Trade Representative Office reached Dhaka, where the implementation of the ‘Agreement on Reciprocal Trade (ART)’ was discussed. It is being told that US President Donald Trump has directly linked these economic benefits to defense agreements. According to the report, the trade benefits to Bangladesh are said to be dependent on these deals.

What will change with ACSA and GSOMIA?

Under the ACSA agreement, American warships and military aircraft will be able to use Bangladesh’s strategic ports—such as Chittagong and Matarbari. Here the American Army will get facilities like refueling, repair and logistics support. On the other hand, sensitive and intelligence information will be exchanged between the two countries through GSOMIA. Experts believe that this will give America permanent surveillance capability in the Bay of Bengal and it will be easy to keep an eye on China’s activities till the Indian Ocean.

Bangladesh’s economic compulsion

According to reports, Bangladesh is pushing this agreement forward for economic reasons. The country’s textile sector is facing economic pressure and America has proposed 19 percent tariff relief and duty-free access on some products. This relief is considered important for Dhaka in the current economic crisis. However, giving American access to its ports and military facilities in return is being considered a sign of a major change in its foreign policy.

Increased concern about China?

Till now Bangladesh has been heavily dependent on China for military equipment and infrastructure development. It is said that about 70 percent of its weapons come from China. In such a situation, America’s increasing presence is being considered a strategic blow to China. This may affect China’s plan under which it was developing alternative corridors through Myanmar and Bangladesh to reduce dependence on the Malacca Strait.

Sheikh Hasina’s old warning in discussion again

Former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina had already claimed that America was pressurizing her to make St. Martin Island available for military use. She had said that if she had agreed to this, she could have remained in power, but she did not compromise with the sovereignty of the country. Now after the current developments, his old statements have again come into discussion.
