‘Will not tolerate attacks on ships in the Strait of Hormuz’ India’s strict statement in UNECOSOC meeting
New Delhi: Amidst the increasing tension in the Middle East, India has taken a tough stance in the United Nations regarding attacks on ships in the Strait of Hormuz. India’s Permanent Representative Parvathaneni Harish clearly stated that targeting ships in this region, endangering the lives of crew and restricting freedom of maritime navigation is completely unacceptable.
India’s strong statement in UNECOSOC meeting
India’s diplomat said this in a special meeting of the United Nations Economic and Social Council (UNECOSOC). This meeting was called for the purpose of securing global energy security and supply. Harish said in the meeting that attacks on ships in the Strait of Hormuz will not be tolerated. He also demanded full respect for international law.
Indian ship attacked
On May 13, 2026, an Indian-flagged ship was attacked near the coast of Oman. This ship was coming from Somalia. Oman’s Navy took immediate action and safely rescued the 14 crew members on board the ship.
The Indian government had condemned this attack. Since the conflict in West Asia began in February 2026, at least three Indian-flagged ships have been attacked so far.
Why is the Strait of Hormuz important?
The Strait of Hormuz is a very sensitive and narrow sea route in the world. About 20 percent of the world’s energy supply (oil and gas) passes through here. Any obstruction on this route affects the economy of the entire world including India.
Tension increased due to attack on Iran
Tension in the region increased after the US and Israeli attacks on Iran on 28 February 2026. Due to Iran’s retaliatory action, the movement of ships in the Strait of Hormuz has been severely affected. This has affected the supply of fuel, fertilizers and other essential goods.
India stressed in the meeting that international cooperation is necessary to deal with this crisis. Both short term and long term measures are needed.
This strict stance of India indicates that it gives priority to the safety of ships and the lives of its citizens. Amidst increasing tensions globally, India is running active diplomacy to ensure its trade and energy security.
