Politics intensifies in Mumbai before Bakrid! Kirit Somaiya wrote a letter to BMC demanding to stop open sacrifices.
Tezzbuzz Desk – As the festival of Bakrid approaches, the politics regarding open sacrifice has intensified in Mumbai. Kirit Somaiya has raised the demand to ban the open sacrifice of goats in residential areas, housing societies and chawls during Bakrid. The BJP leader has written a letter to Mumbai Mayor, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation and the police administration regarding this issue, demanding strict action.
Posting on social media platform X, Somaiya said that sacrifice of animals should not be allowed in open places in the name of religious tradition. He said that sacrifices taking place in residential complexes and public places cause problems to the local people and the Municipal Corporation should strictly enforce the existing rules.
In a letter written to Mumbai Mayor Ritu Rajesh Tawde, he alleged that despite the guidelines of the court and the Municipal Corporation, every year animals are slaughtered in the open at many places. Somaiya said that despite the rules being in place, they are not followed properly, hence this time before the festival, clear instructions should be issued to all the ward officers and concerned agencies.
The BJP leader said that as per the animal slaughter laws applicable in Mumbai, sacrifice is not allowed near any residential area or housing society. He appealed to the administration to strengthen the system of monitoring and action before Bakrid so that there is no dispute of any kind.
Meanwhile, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has also intensified its preparations for Bakrid. According to BMC, special arrangements are being made this time at Deonar slaughter house. Facilities like CCTV surveillance, deployment of security personnel, parking, health services, cleanliness system and food court will be provided here.
According to Additional Municipal Commissioner Dr. Ashwini Joshi, a special market of goats and buffaloes will be organized in Deonar slaughterhouse from May 17 to May 30. Whereas between May 28 and 30, permission has been given for religious animal sacrifice at 109 places in Mumbai. The administration has also made arrangements for 24-hour control room, QR code based animal verification system, temporary shed and veterinary facilities.
Apart from this, this time the facility of online permission and slot booking has also been started through MyBMC mobile app, so that crowd and chaos can be controlled during the festival. It is believed that this year Bakrid can be celebrated on 27 May 2026, although the final date will be decided after the sighting of the moon.
