Can chapters related to Singur and Nandigram movements be removed from the curriculum of Bengal?

Sajal Ghosh, the recently elected BJP MLA from Baranagar assembly constituency in West Bengal’s North 24 Parganas district, has hinted that chapters related to the Singur and Nandigram land movements may be removed from the state board school curriculum. These agitations were carried out by the All India Trinamool Congress against the Left Front government led by the then Chief Minister, late Buddhadeb Bhattacharya.

Ghosh made comments in this regard while talking to journalists during the ‘Education Interface’ program organized at Netaji Indoor Stadium. He said that students also read about Partha Chatterjee, which is worrying. He said that the distortions in history will be corrected. Sajal Ghosh also questioned the portrayal of the Mughal emperors in history textbooks and said that such descriptions were written to serve a particular agenda.

He also expressed his views on the issue of student union elections. He said that the postponed student union elections in most of the colleges since 2017, in Presidency University since 2019 and in Jadavpur University since 2020 should be reinstated soon. He said that students cannot be deprived of the right to elect student representatives as mandated by the University Grants Commission (UGC) and would demand restoration of these elections as soon as possible.

He said, “Our Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari also has a background in student politics. I am hopeful that this year itself we will see student union elections being held.”

Ghosh also stressed the need to strengthen government educational institutions and said that fees of private institutions should be controlled to make education accessible to people of all economic classes.

The program was also addressed by BJP MLAs Purnima Chakraborty and Tarunjyoti Tiwari. Tarunjyoti Tiwari said, “Education is the only way through which we can save Bengal.” Meanwhile, Purnima Chakraborty said, “Our goal is to create a new education system for a self-reliant and progressive Bengal.”
