Punjab News: Big change in Punjab politics, former minister Surjit Singh Rakhra takes up new responsibilities
Punjab News: A major political change was seen in the politics of Punjab on May 16, when senior leader and former cabinet minister Surjit Singh Rakhra joined the Aam Aadmi Party along with his family and supporters. Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann inducted him into the party during a public program organized in Samana. A large number of supporters were also present on this occasion.
Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, while welcoming Surjit Singh Rakhra, said that May 16 will be remembered as an important day in the politics of Punjab. He said that the joining of a leader like Rakhra with a clean image and associated with public service in the party is a good sign for Punjab.
Chief Minister targeted the opposition
During the program, Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann also made a scathing attack on the opposition. He said that those who once talked about ruling Punjab for 25 years, today there are not even 25 people left in their party. He said that with time people rejected those leaders because public trust had weakened.
The Chief Minister said that Surjit Singh Rakhra tried to reform his old party from within, but the circumstances became such that he had to choose a new path. He said that Punjab needs honest and experienced people to take it forward and the experience of the Rakhra family will prove beneficial for the state.
Sacrilege law became a major reason for the decision
Surjeet Singh Rakhra also openly explained the reason for his decision from the stage. He said that the strict anti-blasphemy law was the biggest reason for his decision. He said that for the last one and a half years, he had been continuously attending Samana Morcha, where the demand for a strict law against sacrilege was being raised.
Rakhra said he had told Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann that he would support the party if the government implemented strict sacrilege laws. When the government implemented this law and got approval from the Governor, he kept his promise and decided to join the party.
Appreciation of government’s work regarding water of Punjab
Former minister Surjit Singh Rakhra also appreciated the efforts of the Punjab government to save water and strengthen the canal system. He said that the steps taken by the government to save Punjab from becoming a desert are commendable. The work being done towards strengthening the irrigation system through canals and saving water resources is a ray of hope for future generations.
He said that water is the biggest issue for the farmers of Punjab and the coming generations and the government is working positively in this direction.
Political turmoil increased before 2027 elections
Surjit Singh Rakhra’s joining the party is being considered a big political development before the 2027 assembly elections. According to political experts, this may see a new stir in the politics of Punjab. Besides, this step may also impact the political picture of the state in the times to come.
