Delhi Capitals beat Rajasthan Royals, Punjab Kings bat-bat

In the 62nd match of the Indian Premier League (IPL), Delhi Capitals (DC) defeated Rajasthan Royals (RR) by 5 wickets. In this match played at Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi on Sunday (May 16), RR had set a target of 194 runs for DC, which was achieved by the team captained by Akshar Patel in 19.4 overs. This was DC’s sixth win and its playoff hopes remain intact. On the other hand, RR has faced its sixth defeat.

Rahul-Porel played half-century innings

Chasing the target, KL Rahul and Abhishek Porel gave DC a great start. Both made an opening partnership of 105 runs. Porel played a quick inning of 51 runs in 31 balls, which included 7 fours and 1 six. From the other end, Rahul batted restrainedly and scored 56 runs in 42 balls with the help of 1 four and 3 sixes. After the dismissal of Rahul-Porel, DC was stuck in the run chase but captain Akshar Patel (34 not out in 18 balls) and Ashutosh Sharma (18 not out in 5 balls) helped them reach the target.

 

For RR, Joffra Archer took 2 wickets for 35 runs in 4 overs. Brijesh Sharma also had 2 wickets in his account but he gave away 44 runs in his quota of 4 overs.

Starc prevented RR from scoring big

Earlier, after losing the toss and opting to bat first, RR had scored 160 runs after losing 2 wickets in 14 overs. She was moving towards a huge score but Mitchell Starc derailed RR’s innings by taking 3 wickets in the 15th over. Due to these triple shocks from Starc, RR could not even touch the 200 mark and had to suffer its third consecutive defeat. For RR, Vaibhav Suryavanshi scored 46 runs in 21 balls. Captain Riyan Parag scored 51 runs in 26 balls. Whereas Dhruv Jurel scored 53 runs in 40 balls. For DC, Starc took 4 wickets for 40 runs in 4 overs.

How did Punjab Kings benefit from DC’s win?

In the first match of the day, Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) defeated Punjab Kings (PBKS) by 29 runs. PBKS suffered its sixth consecutive defeat, making its path to the playoffs difficult but DC’s win has boosted its hopes. Now if RR loses one of its remaining 2 matches and CSK also does not win more than 1 match, then PBKS can get the playoff ticket by defeating Lucknow Super Giants in their last match.
