An elephant fell on a woman due to loss of balance

Bengaluru. A woman was crushed to death during a fight between two trained elephants at Dubare Elephant Camp in Karnataka’s Kodagu district. Officials said on Monday that an elephant had fallen on the woman after losing balance during the fight. Karnataka Forest, Ecology and Environment Minister Ishwar Khandre expressed grief over the incident and ordered a detailed investigation.

He also directed the officials to ensure that the common people maintain a safe distance from the wildlife. According to officials, Tulsi (33), a tourist from Tamil Nadu, was standing near the river watching the elephants being bathed when the accident occurred. He told that when the trained elephants ‘Kanjan’ and ‘Martand’ were being bathed, they started fighting among themselves.

Despite the efforts of the mahouts to control him, Kanjan launched a fierce attack on Martand. Due to this attack, Martand lost his balance and fell, due to which the woman got buried under him and died.

Terming the incident shocking, Minister Khandre said it was “extremely painful”. He prayed for the peace of the departed soul and expressed his condolences to the victim’s family. According to a statement issued by the minister’s office, he has ordered a comprehensive investigation into the matter and directed officials to take strict measures to prevent such incidents in future.
