Washington discussing temporary suspension of Iran oil restrictions: Report

Iran has claimed that the United States may be prepared to ease oil sanctions as part of a new negotiation framework, according to a report published by semi-official Tasnim News Agency.

Citing a source close to the negotiation team, Tasnim reported that Washington has agreed in its latest proposal to discuss lifting sanctions on Iranian oil exports and temporarily suspending restrictions enforced by the US Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) until a final agreement is reached.

The report stated that the proposed arrangement would involve a temporary waiver mechanism during the negotiation phase rather than the immediate permanent removal of all sanctions.

Iran has reportedly continued insisting that full sanctions removal must remain part of any comprehensive agreement with Washington. Tehran has repeatedly argued that economic restrictions targeting oil exports, banking operations and financial transactions must be lifted as part of broader commitments linked to nuclear negotiations and regional security discussions.

The latest report comes amid intensified diplomatic activity surrounding Iran’s nuclear programme, maritime security tensions in the Strait of Hormuz and continuing efforts to prevent further escalation in West Asia.

Recent negotiations between the two sides have reportedly focused on uranium enrichment, sanctions relief, regional military tensions and guarantees related to future compliance with any agreement.

Iranian officials have maintained that enrichment activities and nuclear technology are not negotiable, while the United States has continued seeking stronger assurances regarding Tehran’s nuclear activities and regional conduct.

No official confirmation regarding the reported sanctions proposal has yet been issued publicly by the White House, the US State Department or the US Treasury Department.

Global oil markets are closely watching developments in the talks because any easing of restrictions on Iranian crude exports could influence international energy supply patterns and crude prices.

The negotiations remain highly sensitive as diplomatic contacts continue through indirect channels involving regional intermediaries and international partners.
